"Why do you draw lights, and in particular, chandeliers?" was a question my teachers often threw at me when I was studying at the academy... The theme of this art book is "Psychological Space". Artworks depicted here evolve around the concept of "exploring spaces" and were inspired by my personal experiences and inner emotions. Being influenced by Surrealism, Symbolism and Post- Minimalism, the series contains elements such as dream-liked indoor spaces, symbolic objects, and humanistic minimal structures, which become my painting style and those spaces and objects drawn symbolize my pass experiences and my subcon- scious mind. These artworks are not cutting-edge, but contain the remnants of The Renaissance. What I have been doing is not to explore the many pos- sibilities of new art creation but rather to explore how to reflect the inner emotions, to depict my pass experiences and feelings through colours and im- ages while trying to get better understanding of my intimate yet distant inner truth during the process of drawing. Three sections, namely "outer exploration", "inner truth", and "forever creation" used here represent my understanding of the "self" from different time and stages through painting so that audience can share my concept of creation and my determination to choose painting. -Yu Pui Shan. If drawing is inevitable, the drawing expression in Pui Shan's artworks would also has her own value. She uses painting to reveal the changes in her life and the state of her mind, which becomes a lan- guage. From her drawing language, one could see her passion in life. Her use of blue, a melancholy colour in the West, is especially outstanding. She is a sensational person and be able to express the negative while pursuing positive is a brilliant and lovely thought. -Wong Sau Ching.
